Actually, I've only got the equivalent of two years of German behind me, and aside from military and painterly jargon, the prose isn't particularly troublesome. Buchheim writes a sort of stream-of-consciousness, but in relatively short sentences (i.e. no longer or more tortured than a normal English writer might produce.) In other words, the books aren't terribly difficult from a linguistic point of view. Hey, why not spend the next two years learning German? It's a wonderful, dramatic language!
