Boy oh boy! You should read the accounts on the crew of U 333, commanded by Erich Cremer, alias 'Ali'. A pretty nasty bunch of young thugs all around, cannon fodder or jail fodder according to your viewpoint. But good U-boatmen. And the majority of the German people never voted for the mustachioed dictator, nor belonged to the party as such, far less the KM presonnel, who had to be apolitical by order of Grossadmiral Raeder. And they seem to have no trouble respecting the Kaleun, the LI and the IIWO.
