Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

on German TV again I saw the TV-series about DAS BOOT. As kind of an introduction of each part at the beginning a quiet and neutral male voice in the off explains basically: “ The tide has turned against the German U-boats. The commander, a former merchant officer, of the boat is none of H’s Hurrapatrioten but a settled and matter of fact character. He is thirty years old. The crew calls him “Der Alte”.

Probably this kind of portraying the skipper is what at least PETERSEN had in mind when directing PROCHNOW as he did in the movie/TV series to present to the audience a commander of a German U-boat in WWII when on patrol at the beginning of the nineteen forties.
