I had read the article by Douggie Martindale at some point in the past. Although I remembered the information about the bulbs and lenses being removed I didn't remember that the information came from his article. It's nice to see that he gets the credit. If you want to add lights do a pre-war boat. You'll probably have the only one with lights. Be different.

I believe I read that they acted to increase the rigidity of the periscope and so minimized oscillation which results from movement of something with a circular cross section through the water. As I understand it the circular cross section results in alternating vortices being generated on either side of the extended periscope resulting in the oscillation. I've read that the preservative used on the wood on U-boat decks was black but quickly became charcoal color with weathering. With more exposure to the elements a brown tinge would develop.
