I have a report of a U-boat being attacked and bombed on 20 August 1943 15 miles Northeast of Avon (north of Cape Hatteras). The only U-boat I can even find off the East Coast at this point is U-566. I'm assuming this attack was possibly against a whale, but am curious if anyone can provide info as to other boats off the coast or near North Carolina at this time.

I have some reports of attacks on U-boats, hence why I am curious to try and link these with U-boat patrols to see if there is any veracity to the reports.

Hello, As the message title states, I was wondering if anyone could point me to what U-boats were patrolling off the North Carolina coast (or perhaps East Coast in general) between August 1942 to September 1943. I'm aware of those operating from January - July 1942 but am more interested to know which, if any, were plying the waters off the Outer Banks after Doenitz recalled the boats

Hello to All, I found this letter in the North Carolina archives as part of my research and think the attack described in the letter on 4 April was actually the attack on the SS Byron D. Benson by U-552 on the morning of 5 April. Whatever the case, I thought I would share this letter to those interested: Cheers, Frank

A number of years back I remember watching a dive boat from Wilmington, Delaware literally stripping the U-85 of it's interior. They took out all the china, silverware, brass, anything of any resemblance or historical/intrinsic value. As a young child, I may have gone "wow," but studying history seriously today, it saddens and angers me to recall how this war grave became someone

The USS Roper, which sank the U-85, 14 April 1942, was commanded by Lt. Commander Hamilton W. Howe. In the course of my current research on civil defense, I discovered that after his retirement from the USN as a Rear Admiral, Howe became the Winston-Salem / Forsyth County Civil Defense Director. He held this post at least until the mid-1960s. Random I realize, but being U-boat related I thou
