Very nice photograph. It is U 993 half-sunken in a dock at Bergen after the German capitulation. That is why the allied administration has written its number onto the starboard side of its conning tower. In the background one can easily see the Bruno U-boat pen. Aveiga, would love to hear more about the origin of the photograph. Regards Axel

Hi John, I am sorry to say, but the book of Högel is incorrect in this case. He took his drawing from these previously misidentified photographs, but apart from small differences in the appearance of U 460 and U 488, another shot from the sequence of photos not printed in the book clearly shows the CO Schnoor of U 460 together with his men and the other officer. Evidently the emblem of U 460

Hi Ken, you were already on the right path to identify the Type IX-boat on page 21. From the drainage slot scheme, the railing type and other items it is obviously a Type IXC/40 built by the Deutsche Werft Hamburg out of the batch U 535-540. As the UAK emblem can be seen on the radar antenna box, the most likely identity is U 537. The point of time is therefore February to mid-March 1943. By

Hans Fuhrmann was aboard as supernumerary watch officer from 11.04.-02.07.1942. He had served previously with the staff of BdU. Completely lacking all kind of U-boat training, the exact purpose of the assignment is unclear. However, Fuhrmann was not a trainee officer as a future CO. He returned to serve with BdU staff thereafter and was re-assigned in Feb 43 to the Naval High Command as instructo
