I was looking at some pics of the Engine Room of U-995 and noticed some racks on both the Port and Stbd sides, between the frame ribs behind both engines. They at made of flat strap material and open on top. Anyone have any idea what these were used for? Would they have been for food stores?

I'm modelling the Trumpeter 1/48 U-Boat and I am going to change out the incorrect deck plate for the correct pattern. Unfortunately I cannot find any pictures of the original deck plates on a Type VIIC boat. I'm curious if the deck plate styles on U-505 (a Type IXC boat) would be the same. It appears from the few pictures I've found online that the decks were a smooth varnished wo

I'm curious, when a boat was operating on the surface in the Med or any warm climate, would any of the hatches (other than the Bridge hatch) have been open? I would think they would take the opportunity to get some fresh air into the boat, especially as stifling as the heat and humidity must have been in those regions. Would they have opened the galley and/or the torpedo loading hatches?

When the boats came in for their Turm IV retrofits, was the entire boat repainted or just the new metal work? The boat I'm modelling, U-371 was only in port for 21 days for its refit of the Turm and removal of the 88mm gun. This was in Toulon in Sept, 1943. Seems like a short period of time to service the entire boat. I'm modelling the second patrol after it was retrofitted so I'

I was reading through the "Secret!" Operations manual again and in it, it notes that the refrigeration plant is a split system with the Compressor/Condenser unit being located in the Control Room and the Evaporator unit located in the PO Quarters. So I guess this goes back to my original question; Where is the compressor unit located in the Control Room? I'll make the assumpt

As well as the thread I have in my search for the refrigeration unit for these boats, I'm also look for a picture or detailed drawing of one of the Auto Battery Switch cabinet internals. Eventually I would like to include many of these small details in a model but finding pictures of some of these less interesting features is proving to be quite difficult. Thanks in advance.

Keith - Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. Now, if anyone has any pictures of the forward unit, I would be thrilled.

I'm assuming when you say aft of the control room bulkhead you are speaking of the forward bulkhead of the P.O. quarters. This would be behind the bulkhead hatch when it is open, correct? Does anyone have any pictures of this unit? Either that or a decent drawing that shows its location?

Thanks for the reply but I have that manual. That’s the extent of the info I have though. I’m trying to determine the actual location of the comp/Cond unit in the control room. I knew the Evap was in the PO quarters but is the ice production in there too or in the galley? I’ve looked at the pics of U-995 but can’t determine where the comp unit is. The cabinet at the aft end of the port side of th

Being a HVAC mechanic, I was curious about the refrigeration system of the Type VII boats. I know the unit is located in the control room but where? Also, I seem to remember the cabinet opposite the forward WC contained the evaporator. Any information on the system would be greatly appreciated.

I know I'm dredging up an old thread but I'm modeling U-371 and in my research I came across this. Unfortunately the YouTube link appears dead. I would love to see actual video of this boat. My question however is, what is the fixture on the side of the bridge? I know the Naxos is usually mounted on the port side but what is that cabinet for? And why the gas cylinders? It appears to
