I have seen on an auction site some books for sale relating to the German Navies including a first edition of "Die lauchende Kuh" by Jost Metzler and signed by him.
Nrs 152 & 153 are the relevant ones to look at if anyone is interested.

P.S. Nr 151 might also be of interest as it is 2 books about the 1936 Olympics

I believe XO is an American term = Execuative Officer.
I think the German would be 'eins we oh' (the German W being pronounced as a V)
In the Royal Navy it would be 'Number One' (Or Jimmy - for Jimmy the one)

Hi Gottfried,
If you have any photos of Oblt.z.S. Walter Kimmelmann could you send them to Gummi or one of the moderators? They could then post the pics on this site for others to see.

Hi Don,
Thanks for the pics. I can say for sure that it is not Kptlt.d.R. Paul König who was the skipper when she was the Deutschland. The other 3 commanders when she was a warship, SMU 155 were Kptlt. Karl Meusel & K.Kapts. Erich Eckelmann and Ferdinand Studt. I have never seen pics of the last three and there are non on this site. Perhaps some of our European or American friends can hel

Welcome aboard 'fly-boy'. You shouldn't feel out of your depth here as I know some others have had contacts with aviation.
Also a few U-boat commanders were in the Luftwaffe before they transferred.
It is quite a vast subject that is covered here so you will be on quite a steep learning curve.
Best Wishes

Vidart,
Try emailing Pen and Sword books and see what they have to say about it. I am sure that as a respected publisher they would be interested.
If you prefer I can contact them myself sending details of your comments/remarks.

Hi Gudmundur,
Being a father, grandfather & great grandfather I enjoyed seeing the picture of your little lad. He seems to enjoy the water and will, hopefully, become a great swimmer or sailor.
Look after him, keep him safe and well and make sure he grows up big and strong.
All the best to you all,
God Bless

PS I think the names are excellent.

I have included the USS Squalus in English for those who don't speak German.
Sad times for submariners even before the 2nd World War started.
Hope you had a good trip to the US.
Kind regards

O.Fähnrich z.S. Heinz Mischke served on all three U-boats & was on board U 270 when she was sunk on 13.08.44. All the crew survived.
Another source of information is
Which states that he was born 16.08.21 and died sometime in 2000. Perhaps you can update that side with the latter date.

H.M.S. is only used by ships of the Royal Navy. Other navies have some indication of the country in the title e.g. HMNZS for New Zealand.
Gotland is a name that has never been used and never will be used for a ship of the Royal Navy.
Also the Royal Navy does not have their national flag on their uniform as many others do.

I am not prepared to reveal details of my contact to people I do not know.
Also my contact is not a researcher as such but has a good knowledge of the English language and is interested in things military.

Thanks JNM for your humourous post. Just send your submariners somewhere to learn how to navigate submerged. Not all the Atlantic belongs to France.
Anyway no harm done, well not to the crews and the vessels are repairable.
"Vive la France" - Rule Britannia no longer applies really. :-((

26. Re: Which boat?
Check him out using a search engine. It seems highly unlikely for one in his position to be a stowaway on any warship at the beginning of WW2 although he was an ex Norwegian & Swedish merchant mariner.
He was hung on 16.10.1946 as a war criminal.

Hi VEK,
I have just emailed our French friend JN to complain about it :-))
I would be interested to know how such a thing could happen in this age of advanced technology and in such a vast ocean & underwater. But, happen it did and let us all thank God that it was not more serious and none of the crews were injured.
Kindest regards to you and yours,
