Hi, as far as I can ascertain, on the second, third and fourt patrol, which were rather successful on the whole. They caused a lot of damage, but nothing comparable to the damage inflicted by the Swordfish plane which sent the boat to an actual depth of 90 meters in the Straits of Gibraltar. Hope this helps!

I would really not like to go into the matter, as it smacks of gossip, but the Captain repeatedly warned LGB 'Lothar, lass das' (drop it!) about the whole story, but he didn't get his wish. Altough she isn't mentioned in the book, the lady was present throughout this last voyage of the Otto Hahn to Durban and back, and by the time they had reached Durban, the Captain had had e

Hi, it is all very well to debate theoretical questions, but the fact was that the boat had settled at a depth of less than a hundred meters, so pressure would have been appreciably less. Also, you need to take the following points under consideration: a)the commander and the chief engineer were in no doubt that the damage could be repaired and the boat could resurface under its own 'steam&#

Hallo da! Actually, I never got around to asking such a question and learnt quite by chance that the LI got appointed to another VIIC boat, so I have no concrete evidence to offer. Sorry to disappoint you, but there it is! I hope everything is well in your corner of the world. All the Best, Io

Hi Jean-Noel, there must be something wrong with the databank, Herr Grade was again affected to a Type VII, not a Type IX. Regards, Io

Well, Paul, get a German-speaking friend to write a nice, polite letter to the gentleman in question. He lives in Bornheim near Bonn and is always glad to share his experiences. Be honest and clear about your reasons for writing to him and if you get a detailed reply get the same German-speaking friend to translate. The address is Wohnstift Beethoven in Bornheim. Best of luck!

Hi Steve, pretty much what Ken says about Laboe applies to the XXI in Bremerhaven, you pay an entrance fee of 3 Euro, tour everything, photograph anything you like and can buy lapel pins and little booklets at the entrance. Have visited twice and liked the interior very much. While in Bremerhaven, your client should also visit the Seefahrtsmuseum which is situated nearby. There's a very hand

Dear Pat, I hope you received my latest e-mail. I wouldn't call Herr Grade's chin weak, it's rather pronounced, in fact. Keep well, Io

Dear Pat, thanks for the lovely picture, the ship seems a really big b@#$#@#%, so perhaps the urge was great to sink it and earn all those lovely Brownie points for Onkel Karl! But in later life the Captain must have been glad that the torpedo was a dud. By the way, I sent you a card, All the Best Io
