Robert, Interesting idea but I think the size of the explosive and range is more determined by the length of the torpedo than its diameter. Of the 21” torpedoes used on US submarines there does the diameter remains the same but the explosive weights change normally with an increased length (which also affected the range with larger flasks and such) Bliss-Leavitt Mk 9 210 Lbs (TNT) r

Glad you got your answer. There is a lot of really smart people on this forum. Maybe if I hang around some of them smarts will rub off on me.

I think I may have found half the answer. My original question was actually two separate but related questions 1. Why did Japan, Britain, Germany and United States all use torpedoes with the same diameter (533mm/21”)? 2. Why was 533mm/21” chosen? The answer for the first question is that Japan, Britain, United States, Germany and Italy were all in cahoots with Robert Whiteheadâ€

Bruce, I am not sure I completly understand your question. Due to my mania about my torpedo question, I am going over my references again. I would like to help you out but I am not sure what exactly you are asking. I know that the French had the 533mm Toulon series of torpedoes but after the fall of France all further torpedo development was stopped in favour of the German G7 series. T

I would be interested only if the overall design was dignified. I dislike garish t-shirts. Are you only considering t-Shirts? How about a polo type shirt with the design on the pocket. In any case, I would like to see the design before I will sign up for one. Every one has different tastes in clothing, Always better to see it first.

> Thomas: > > Are you Platapus - Seasoned Skipper? > > Later, > > ROBERT M. Who wants to know? I refuse to comment on the grounds it may incriminate myself. This question of torpedo diameters is really starting to academically bug me. I am going through all my reference materials and can't find anyone who has addressed this previously. I wonder

Yes it was interesting reading the reactions of the American's when they got their hands on the G7e. But what about the Mk X and Mk XIV? They were under design before any German torpedoes were captured. The Mk X was designed in 1917 The Mk XIV was designed in 1930 The British Mk VIII was designed in 1925 The G7a was designed in 1930. What is interesting is that the G7 is a 19.

With the Mk 27, was a sabot used? How did the 21 inch tubes handle the 19 inch Mk 27? Anyway, my real question is how the common diameter of 533mm came about with three different countries all about the same time (post 1920)? Speaking of WW-II only. There has to be some technological/policy reason. I just can't imagine three different countries "randomly"choosing 533 mm.
