U-172.This picture was taken by Radioman W. R. Burke. He was seated behind the pilot (Lt. (jg) Gaylord) and was peering with his Fairchild K 20 camera over Gaylord's right shoulder through the closed glazing of the TBF-1c Avenger cockpit. The swirl of
U-172 is obvious, her conning tower barely under the surface at that moment. The two white dots are reflections from the Perspex glazing.
