U-172 is still not fully surfaced though more of her bow is now visible. This picture also clearly shows how close the US destroyers were at this point. Closest to
U-172 is USS Clemson, seen on the right; the position of her 12.13 depth charge attack is shown by the huge concussion seen to the left of U.172's bow. The stern of USS Osmond Ingram is seen on the upper left of the picture. The ship, until then lying idle in order to assess the position of
U-172, has just started to pick up speed, intent on engaging the U-boat.
