Prisoner of war April 5, 1916. Smiths was promoted to Kapitänleutnant on January 30, 1920 with a seniority date of April 26, 1917, the date he would otherwise have been promoted to Kapitänleutnant had he not been captured.
After the war, Smiths became the German Consul in Messina and managed a company of production of agrumes essences.
