Around 2215A/20, the German merchant Gloria (5896 GRT, built 1917) is intercepted north off Iceland in position 66°30'N, 22°05'W by the British light cruiser HMS Sheffield (Capt. E. de F. Renouf, CVO, RN). A prize crew was put on board around 1100A/21 which then took the German vessel to Kirkwall.

At 0855Z/24, west of the Faeroer Islands, in approximate position 62°15'N, 08°45'W, HMS Sheffield (Capt. E. de F. Renouf, CVO, RN), sighted a merchant vessel which was thought to be an oiler. She soon lost sight of the vessel in the bad visibility due to a rain storm. HMS Sheffield did not pursue the vessel as she was searching for German warships thought to be in the area.
The vessel sighted was in fact the German merchant vessel Ludolf Oldendorff (1953 GRT, built 1903) which looked like an oiler. She managed to escape and made it back to Germany. (3)

After having fuelled she departed again to patrol in the Iceland - Faeroer passage. (4)
10 Dec 1939
HMS Sheffield (Capt. E. de F. Renouf, CVO, RN) arrived at Wallsend-on-Tyne from patrol. She is to be taken in hand for repairs to a defect to 'Y' turret. (4)
