History
Notes on loss At 08.14 hours on 21 Apr, 1943, the Wanstead (Master William B. Johnston) in convoy ONS-3 was torpedoed by U-415 (Neide) southeast of Cape Farewell. Two crew members were lost. The master, 40 crew members and seven gunners abandoned ship and were picked up by HMS Poppy (K 213) (Lt N.K. Boyd, DSC) and HMS Northern Gift (4.50) (LtCdr A.J. Clemence) and landed at St. Johns. The corvette probably tried to scuttle the ship, but she remained afloat and was sunk by a coup de grāce from U-413 at 13.45 hours.
