At 04.30 hours on 4 Sep, 1942, the unescorted Amatlan (Master Gonzalo Montalvo Salazar) was hit on the starboard side by a stern torpedo from U-171 about 60 miles off Tampico. The tanker had evaded three attacks with spreads of two torpedoes before being hit and took three coups de grâce until she sank.
