At 15.17 hours on 20 Sep 1942, U-596 attacked the convoy SC-100 southeast of Cape Farewell and reported one ship sunk and another damaged. In fact, only the Empire Hartebeeste (Master James Fawcett Travis) was hit and sunk. The master, 33 crew members, nine gunners and three passengers (DBS) were rescued. The master and 20 survivors by the Norwegian merchant Rio Verde and landed at Liverpool on 29 September. The chief officer and 24 survivors by the Norwegian merchant Norhauk and landed at Oban on 28 September.
