| Notes on loss | At 13.37 hours on 13 Oct, 1942, the unescorted Empire Nomad (Master John Thomas Nelson) was torpedoed and sunk by U-159 about 250 miles south of Cape Point, Cape Colony. Seven crew members and three gunners were lost. The master, 19 crew members and five gunners were picked up by the Panamanian motor tanker Elisha Walker, transferred to HMAS Norman (G 49) (Cdr H.M. Burrell) and landed at Capetown. 19 crew members were picked up by the British merchant Tynebank and landed at Rio de Janeiro. | ||
