Attacks on this boat and other events
19 Nov 1942
The target of the attack on 19 Nov. 1942 in the Atlantic SW of Cape St. Vincent in
position 35.38N, 11.48W by British Hudson bomber (608 Sqn RAF/C), credited with sinking U-98, was in fact U-413, which escaped, but with severe damage.
8 Jun 1944
A British Halifax (502 Sqn RAF, pilot J. Spurgeon) dropped four 600 lb (272kg) bombs on the boat. The aircraft suffered severe flak damage, but the boat was also damaged, and was forced to return to base at Brest. (Sources: Blair, vol 2, page 583)
2 recorded attacks on this boat.
Schnorchel-fitted U-boat
This boat was fitted with a Schnorchel underwater-breathing apparatus and sailed equipped with it in August 1944 but it was of course installed prior to that date.
Read more about the Schnorchel and see list of fitted boats.
Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-413 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
