Ian -
My great uncle has not been previously named in this forum. He was called David Hart (b. 1914) and was one of my grandmother's brothers. My gran, supported by my great aunt (another sister of Uncle David) had had a small battle of her own regarding a memorial to my uncle and others which had been moved from one Medway location to another.
If I have this right (and I will, in due course, be checking out the local newspaper article in which my grandmother appeared concerning this - I remember her being very upset by it and I think even contacted her MP over it - I have a copy of this article somewhere), there had been both some kind of memorial (a remembrance book I think) that had been sited in a church in Chatham where there was also a memorial window (I believe to the Ibis). I have pictures of this church which I will also dig out.
This church is now used for other purposes and my grandmother was concerned that the change of use of the church would affect people wanting to visit the memorial. The situation, as I understand it, is that the memorial window is still in situ and can be viewed - but only by appointment. I went to the church myself only the other year to find that I could not gain immediate access although, in fairness, there are signs up advising anyone how to arrange a viewing. With regard to the other part of the memorial - as I say, I think a memorial book - this has been removed from the church and is kept in the care of the army at another location, also in Chatham I think.
I remember my great aunt recently telling me that she did not agree with this property being transferred from the care of the navy to the army's care. I am also aware that when she tried to ascertain the exact location of the Ibis going down, it was very difficult to find this out and she was given conflicting answers.
If you are planning on an anniversary event and looking for a location, I would have said that this church/chapel would be the very best location to have it but I do not know if that would be allowed now as it is now used for other purposes. I am happy to find more details of all this for you.
May I also reiterate to anyone reading this that I do have a photo of my great uncle and fellow crew members aboard the Ibis that I am happy to share but that I would also like, if possible, a copy of the Excel list that someone has of the crew members who were aboard the Ibis.
