My late father George Yallop was on Radar on HMS "Ibis" when it got sunk. He had to swim for several hours prior to being picked up by a Russian cruiser and was later transferred to Gibralter. In 1942 he was awarded the DSM for his part in the North Africa campaign.
I have two photos of crewe members and a list of crewe members who lost their lives on that fateful day.
He was enjoying a quiet drink in a pub in Romford one day and, much to his surprise, met a crewe member from HMS Ibis, Jock Murray last seen 39 years ago, this meeting was recorded in the Romford Observer 13 February 1981. He was also in touch with the commander of HMS Ibis, Geoffrey Marr, who went on to become commander of the "Queen Elizabeth", and took her to her final resting place in waters off Hong Kong.
