While leaving Algiers harbour HMS Universal (Lt. C. Gordon, RN) her steering motor failed and she collided with the US destroyer escort USS Herbert C. Jones (Lt.Cdr. A.W. Gardes, Jr., USN).
HMS Universal's bow was badly bent and she required about two weeks of repair. (1)
