USS Bowfin (Cdr. A.K. Tyree, USN) departed from Guam for her 8th war patrol. She was ordered to patrol in Japanese home waters off Honshu and Hokkaido.

She was escorted out by USS Oracle (Lt.Cdr. D.W. Deits, USNR).
