Apr 1963
April 1963 The USS Sunbird ASR 15 took part in the search for the USS Thresher off the coast of Cape Cod. Spent days looking for her to no avail. Took part in the memorial service for the lost submarine. (1)
Jul 1964
During July 1964 Sunbird was in Getmo on shakedown when she was summoned to St Andres Island where a Columbian Naval ship went aground. Sunbirds crew took part in the demolition of the Padilla.
15 Nov 1976
Assisted in recovery of F-14 Tomcat lost off of USS Kennedy during Nato Operations off coast of Scotland. Fighter was equipped with secret Phoenix Missile system. Encountered severe winds & high seas (65 ft seas) while returning to US. Crew was awarded Unit Commendation for operation Spacious Sky. (1)
