Giovanni da Procida (T.V.(Lt.) F. Castracane Degli Antelminelli) departed Gibraltar for Bermuda. She is escorted by USS PCE-846 (Lt. F.D. Andruss, USNR).

26 Nov 1944
From 26 November to 1 December 1944, Giovanni da Procida (T.V.(Lt.) F. Castracane Degli Antelminelli) conducted A/S exercises off Bermuda with Task Group 22.4 which was made up of the escort carrier USS Core (T/Capt. R.S. Purvis, Jr., USN, also COMTASKGR 22.4) and the destroyer escorts USS Moore (Lt.Cdr. R.H. Jones, USNR, with COMCORTDIV 7, Capt. T.S. Dunstan, USNR on board), USS Keith (Lt. J.L. Rinn, USNR), USS Tomich (Lt.Cdr. C.B. Brown, USNR), USS J. Richard Ward (Lt. E.B. Seeley, Jr., USNR), USS Otterstetter (Lt.Cdr. L.E. Whitmore, USNR), USS Sloat (Lt.Cdr. W.A. Cashman, USNR). USS PCE-846 (Lt. F.D. Andruss, USNR) was also in the area as close escort for the submarine.

7 Dec 1944
Giovanni da Procida (T.V.(Lt.) F. Castracane Degli Antelminelli) departed Bermuda for A/S exercises with ships of Escort Division 4, which was made up of the destroyer escorts USS Pillsbury (Lt.Cdr. G.W. Cassleman, USNR, with COMCORTDIV 4, T/Cdr. F.S. Hall, USN on board), USS Flaherty (Lt.Cdr. H.C. Duff, USNR), USS Frederick C. Davis (Lt. J.R. Crosby, USNR), USS Chatelain (Lt.Cdr. D.S. Knox, USNR) and USS Neunzer (Lt.Cdr. V.E. Gex, USNR).

The 6th destroyer escort of Escort Division 4, USS Pope ( Lt.Cdr. R.J. Montgomery, USNR) did not participate in the exercises.

USS PCE-846 (Lt. F.D. Andruss, USNR) was also in the area as close escort for the submarine.

On completion of the exercises late in the evening USS Pope parted company to escort USS R-9 back to port. Early on the 7th, a crewmember of USS R-9 was lost overboard. A search was undertaken but he was not found.

The remaining ships of Escort Division 4 remained at sea.

8 Dec 1944
Giovanni da Procida (T.V.(Lt.) F. Castracane Degli Antelminelli) and five out of six ships of Escort Division 4, the destroyer escorts USS Pillsbury (Lt.Cdr. G.W. Cassleman, USNR, with COMCORTDIV 4, T/Cdr. F.S. Hall, USN on board), USS Flaherty (Lt.Cdr. H.C. Duff, USNR), USS Frederick C. Davis (Lt. J.R. Crosby, USNR), USS Chatelain (Lt.Cdr. D.S. Knox, USNR) and USS Neunzer (Lt.Cdr. V.E. Gex, USNR) were already at sea having conducted A/S exercises.

The escort carrier USS Guadalcanal (T/Capt. B.C. McCaffree, USN, also COMTASKGR 22.7) and he 6th destroyer escort of Escort Division 4, USS Pope (Lt.Cdr. R.J. Montgomery, USNR) departed Bermuda to join the exercises which lasted to the 11th of December.

USS PCE-846 (Lt. F.D. Andruss, USNR), the close escort for the submarine was detached for other duties in the morning of the 8th. The minesweeper USS Indicative (Lt. E.A. Comee, USNR) sailed from Bermuda to take over the close escort duties of the submarine.

On completion of the exercises late in the evening USS Pope parted company to escort USS R-9 back to port. Early on the 7th, a crewmember of USS R-9 was lost overboard. A search was undertaken but he was not found.

The remaining ships of Escort Division 4 remained at sea.
