Life Preservers: red or black?

Dear Friends,
I have yet another matter about which I would like to solicit your collective wisdom: the colour of the life-preservers. Ought I paint them black, as a couple of articels I have read suggest, or red, as I have also seen? I am leaning towards black, as that seems to make the most sense for camouflage purposes. As a closing note, I though it might interest you to know that, for the life preservers, I am using those furnished in the egregious academy kit, for which ehobbies refunded my money (w/o requiring a return of the useless kit). I have also used the periscopes as scratch material for the shafts extending on the sides of the deck gun. So, especially as I was able to get a refund, there actually seems to be some benefit to be taken by my initial poor choice. For whatever it is worth, the preservers for the academy kit are in perfect scale for my 1:125 hunter, even though they were intended for a 1:150 kit. Of course, there is also the matter that, to my now more sophisticated knowledge, the IX vessels did not even brandish life preservers on the tower. Yet another exhibit to the case that the academy kit is a total, utter abomination, an appalling afront to the unsuspecting consumer....
As always, I write too much. Your kind thoughts and counsel are appreciated.
Warm Regards,
Einsamer Wolf
