I think you are part correct..? I do think they were red in peace time
and for training u-boat crews in the early stages of the war..??.
However, I have seen some photos of U-boat crews on the watch on
the conning tower wearing black preservers over their leather jackets
and trousers which were worn by crew members in bad weather.
So someone may inform me if I'm correct on this topic..?
