Hi EW,
I don't know of any factory making a life preserver with a black or grey cover, however, that does not prevent the crew repainting them on board. I just do not know. All the photos with boats at sea show them without the rings on the tower sides.
It also does not make any sense to go deep diving with the rings hanging outside, since they had Kapok (=Cork) inside, which would have been squeezed to the size of a Wiener Wuerstchen (hot dog to you non German speakers) by the water pressure. Cheers, RB
