Hi Will,

The best collective wisdom tells us that no U-boats went to sea with red showing below the waterline. This is a subject who\'s answer is not very well documented......hopefully we will continue to find more information over time!

In any case, during the pre- and early-war years there is some consensus that the hull below the waterline was painted with a red lead (as a preservative)....and then covered over with the dark grey color.

As much I like the look of the black boot topping, I have not been able to find any photographs that show this.

As for the color to be used when painting a model of a WW2 U-boat today, I\'ve found that the Testor\'s ModelMaster paints come real close. Specifically, RLM 72 (Grun) for the dark gray and RLM 63 (lichtgrau) for the light gray are virtually exact matches when compared to the WW2 German RAL color charts. Some folks would say that the dark gray (RLM 72) could perhaps be lightened just slightly by adding a drop of white to the bottle.

-hope this helps!

Jeff
