I sent a jpeg of the original photo from the book.

The caption for the photo states that the photo was taken in February 1942 as the ship was entering the harbor at La Spezia Italy. In the photo you can definitely make out the viking ship insignia that indicates it is the U-83, as well as the bulge in the side of the conning tower to support the visibly elongated wintergarten. further on in the book is a photo of the U-596, a Type VIIc, with a similar style of wintergarten. In that photo one can see the hatch for the ammunition stowage container, directly behind the attack periscope, which is the reason for the elongation of the wintergarten, if you want i can make a scan of that photo too. Credit for the photo is attributed to the Bundesarchiv.
