Frank,

you are quite correct,

the photos are of two seperate subs, the photo on the right (on my web page) is the U-83 (indicated by the viking ship insignia) and the ship in the photo on the left is the U-596. I suppose I could have indicated that on the web page :)

the photo of the U-83 came from page 16 of the squadron U-boats in Action, the photo of the U-596 is originally from page 29. I included both photos, because the general layout appears similar, and the photos show the ammo stowage container hatch from two different angles.

I believe the major difference is that the u-83 is a pre-war VIIb like the u-47, while the u-596 is a VIIc that was built 2 years later. major diffs also include a completely different ladder on the side of the u-596 conning tower, and the casing for the longer range rod antenna, but beyond that the general layout of the lengthened wintergarten seems very close.
