Hi Dougie,
Really do not have much to add to Sam Reichart's explanations.
Only a quick addition to subject of barnacles. They attach themselves at random and like to be in the area where there is current (remember, they feed on plankton floating by). Typical sizes between 1/4 to 3/4 inch. Later in the war, when boats spent more time submerged at slower speeds (typ.4kts) they attached themselves all over the boat - even on the bridge. Rgds, RB
