Hi Chris,
What you should consider is that even though you can see daylight through the vents you can also see the pressure hull. A submarine is a pressure hull inside a facia, if you open the vents you're going to have to incorporate something to give the impression that there is a pressure hull inside. The deck gratings would also need opening. A friend of mine scratch built a Type IX in 72scale and he used a curved piece of black card to simulate the interior.
