My grandfather, Horst Semmling, was at the U-1006 and not died on 16.10.1944 (the date is sure, he told from this date because it is my birthday - many years later). As I know from him only some were taking prisoner on the canadian ship with many shocked canadians. The reason was the decision of capitain Voigt to take guns after dive-up (was necessary due to the damages of U-1006). Everybody got the command to shot with the guns against the battle ships (I believe tree ships - canadians and british). So there were many canadians and british solder top on the ship and so an easy target. My gandfather was one of the last which left the U-1006 without gun (not enought guns for everybody). Therefore I belive only the last seamens were not killed by the allied seamens. I know my grandfurther was shocked regarding the many killed solders of both sides. He was looking for his friends and all of them were in the water or on the U-1006, but killed. The seamens at the british battle ship were very very aggressiv due to here killed friends. Afterwards my grandfather were gone to england till 12.4.1948. Many years later (~1987) he came back to England. He meets friends and families from this time. On the 6th of sept.1999 he died too.
