Just noticed the U-1006 website. My Dad was on the Annan and Canadian run British River class frigate obtained from the US/UK during the war. My Dad's ship was credited with the disabling the U-1006 with the 4" guns crew. It was sunk by one of the depth charges that hit the sub and rolled off and detonated under it. 45 survivors were take with 9 submariners not making it. It was at the time the closest running battle between a sub and a surface vessel. The bridge was arming grenades and one or two seaman were blasting away sitting on mushrooms.

My dad volunteered to be part of the boarding party and as a result of this managed to liberate a fine kriegs marine watch off of one of the submariner prisoners, although this type of "libertion" was frowned upon. The Captatin of the Annan, Belfry, was presented by the the U-Boats captain his binoculers which he kept up on the bridge with a strick hands off policy.

The now watchless submariner was one Hans Rebhehn of Hamm Germany. My Dad had always felt guilty he took Hans' watch so finally after 4 replacement stems he had it cleaned and mailed it off to him with a letter in German explaining how sorry he was that he stole it. It arrived on Hans; 71st birthday. He was overwhelmed with emotion and sent a replacement back to my Dad.

Unfortunately, Dad passed away during the exchange so my family phoned the German Embassy in Ottawa on. on what the protocol would be. It was suggested that the replacement watch be sent back to Hans along with a letter of explanation, which we did.

This watch also becamee the basis behind the Eulogy my brother put togetherfor Dad's funeral. Not a dry eye in the house, very moving.

Hans did send over their ship's logo a view of a pig's arse and the pig smelling a 4 leaf clover. (not so lucky however). Apparently they had U=1006 reunions amd Annan reunions. Dad and Hans were going to get together when Hans came over a visit but it never came to pass.
