Cavity magnetron.

The reason the Germans fell behind was that they did not develop the cavity magnetron which was invented in Britain in 1940. The cavity magnetron was one of those empirical inventions which drags theory behind it. Getting into the microwave frequency range requires very small components for conventional radio theory or something new like the magnetron. Today we have ICs and use them to operate in the microwave frequencies, but solid state electronics did not exist during WWII. Conventional tubes can not amplify microwaves.
The Germans captured a magnetron from a wrecked British bomber late in 1942 and it then took until early 1945 to get their own set called Berlin into limited production. BTW, they still did quite nicely with the UHF radar they had on the ground, but the airborne radar was a big problem.
I am sure some of our electronics experts can expand on this rather elementary post.
