I don\'t have an answer, but I too have wondered about this. Historically, in the Pacific theater, US subs (Baleo and Tench) could almost always find a thermal in the first 500ft. With the U-Boats\' greater depth capabilities, it seems as if thermals would have been more significant. And yet, I can\'t remember a U-Boat account in which a thermal factored into an escape. In the Pacific war, accounts of evasion \"thanks to a good thermal\" are rife.

Why were thermals less of a factor--or at least a known or discussed factor--in the Atlantic theater?
