I also have never heard, and do not know, if a bathythermograph was on a U-boat.

Thermals in the North Atlantic tend to be deeper than the Pacific. They also vary by weather, currents and a lot of other factors. In the Pacific, sometimes it would be too deep to be used, sometimes at only 200 feet or even less. Often a US boat would go \'deep\' just before an attack to find the thermocline layer depth and plan evasion tactics accordingly. It was quite usefull.

In the Atlantic I read (where was that?..) that they typically were at or below 600 feet, below rated U-boat depth. Too deep to be tactifully useful.
