Interesting comments and I admit it makes sense, though I imagine that having a ship do that every day must have drove the destroyer Captains nuts. In the case of HX-156, the ship having the aft position was the USS Niblack. Also, possibly the Ancylus was in reality having mechanical problems, as the USS Benson reported in their log that the tanker was showing \"breakdown\" lights at times. But of course, the ship was reportedly leaving and returning to the convoy on a daily basis.

Overall, I guess this says that there is no confirmed account of a convoy vessel \"cooperating\" with German U-boats, which is what I wanted to find out. It will be interesting though to see if the CNO ever investigated the Ancylus\' behavior as recommened by the Task Unit Commander.
