Hi
I have a friend, who is interested in the fate of the u-boar U 997 and its crew. He already knows about that it went to Argentina after the war, and was interned, but the specifics of what heppened with Crew and vessel are mysterious.
Another question he has is about German u-boats in the Kara Sea. Any and all replies are very gratefully accepted.
Henrik
These are his questions:
\"1) Has there been ever published a book which described in details the ride of U-997 (Oblt. H. Schaeffer) to Argentina in May 1945? Did any of the
ex-crewmembers wrote a book about this? I would really like to know how this trip went on, if they met any problems, like meeting an Allied ship; and also how
they were received by the Argentina. It is often written in books that they sailt to Argentina and that the submarine was handed over to USA, but there is never said
what has happen with a crew. Were they shipped back to Germany, USA..or stayed in Argentina and asked for asylum? And How come that Argentina handed
over such modern submarine to USA? I suppose the Argentina didn\'t had at that time much modern submarines if any at all, and they could surely use this, so why
handing over to USA is a bit mystery to me.
2) German Naval War in Kara Sea: what did Germans tried to achieve by setting up the secret submarine base in Sporny Navalok Gulf at Nowaja Zemlja Island,
and how is possible that Soviet submarine S-101 met German submarine (sorry can\'r remember which one right now) and sunk it from 900 meters??? German
submarines had sometimes bad luck, but they certainly weren\'t a fools and should noticed an enemy submarine approaching. This happen in Kara Sea, a sea for
which I thought had no Soviet submarines patrolling there. This all seems a bit mytsery to me. Possible that British (knowing the codes of German Kriegsmarine)
informed the Sovies about the presence of German U-Boat in Kara Sea?\"
