Hi Benard,

I can’t speak from experience about spotting U-boats from a plane but it would have to have a lot to do with how clear the water was at the time. As a scuba diver I have seen a couple of days when I could see the U-352 from the surface 110 feet down just by putting my mask in the water. On other days I have seen the visibility at the same site around 20–30 feet. There are a lot of factors that determine the clarity of an ocean at any given moment in time. In general, according to a number of U-boat books I have read, the Mediterranean is clearer than the Atlantic as far as spotting U-boats from the air is concerned.

Regards,

Ken Dunn
