The small firearms were kept is sealed boxes. Considering the U-boat warfare acting times (one slow target could be stalked for hours) there were no need to keep them handy. Plenty of time to get them readied if need ever arose. Is was (and still is) extremely dangerous to risk a single shot being fired by mistake inside the hull as it acts like a machine gun burst just bouncing. (U571 movie picture was extremely unrealistic ALSO on THIS aspect).
