My understanding of clutches on type VII and type IX, is that the clutches were used to engage and disengage the diesel engines from the screw shafts, when switching from diesel propulsion to battery propulsion,
Clutches were also used between the diesels and the electrical generators, when switching from battery charge to the screws.

This is unlike American WWII submarines where the diesels provided electricity only for charging the batteries, or electrical power to run the electric motors attached to the screws .

The clutch would likely be a dry single plate lever actuated lock in type similar to what is used on heavy construction equipment to this day.

I may be incorrect in any of this information, and if so I will gladly accept further input.
