Wasn't just U-Boat engines that suffered from it. Deford covered this topic pretty thoroughly, even showing a photo of a 6-jug tugboat crankshaft that had snapped. It looked to be at least 18" across the main journal...The trick was to get the engine through the "critical point" as quickly as possible.
Still wondering about what kind of clutches were employed. Cone, dry disc, wet disc, single, multi disc? Dog clutch? Sprag clutch?
