A version of the Snorkel was found on the American Confederate States Submarine 'H. L. Hunley" and the Continental Army's "Bushnel's Turtle". The Turtle's snorkel used a floating ball head valve simular to the WWII design and it has just been discovered that the Hunley used bellows for forced ventilation. The Hunley's breathing tubes could be laid flat to the deck when not in use, like the early German snorkels.
