Hi Robert,
Type IX's (only ones which got the autogiro) made flat out a little over 19kn. So they did turn into the wind (just like air craft carriers). Thus true wind speed plus boat speed quickly generates sufficient apparent wind to get thing aloft and keep it there until winched in. Rgds, RB
