Foxer was a towed noise-making array that operated on the same frequency as the noises from the escort's screws, only louder. It was premised that the acoustic torpedos would home in on the array instead of the screws.
They were disliked, hampered operations, and limited the escort to 15 knots.
According to Padfield, escort crews could fool the torpedos by aggressively changing the revolutions of the screws, effectively changing the frequency and confusing the torpedo.
That's my story and I'm stickin to it!
