Correct. The pipes looked liked large depth charges and the complete set
weighed up to 6000 lbs. Tow speed was limited to 14 knots. The german
GNAT torpedo was designed to ignore the Foxers, so the Navy developed the
FANFARE system which was also towed behind the ship, but used a
streamlined fish shaped like a hedgehog charge that had an electric motor
inside. Inside the fish was a spindle-rotor assembly that howled like a banshee when power was applied, causing the spindles to spin like crazy. The noise was very loud, and could be tuned to the frequency of the ship's screws, making
torpedoes with filters obsolete.
