We only used Foxer once, it was complicated to deploy and recover and was dumped. It was replaced by "Cat" which was a single noise maker on a light wire, it could be activated and recovered quickly. The noise maker consisted of two reinforcement type steel bars about 5 ft long fixed parallel to each other a few inches apart and held together at their ends in a rubber mount. It was towed some distance astern, held athwartships in a bridle. The sound was produced by the action of water resonating between the two bars. It was used when proceeding towards a submarine. When nearing the sub, a single depth charge was dropped to countermine any Gnat which might be following, the Cat was recovered and speed dropped to 8kts and "step aside" tactic adopted. In normal search mode no Foxer or Cat was deployed.
