At the start of the war U-Boats had 2 electrical driven air compressors. By the mid war period the type VIIC had repalced one if its electrical compressors with a Junkers compressor (which was of a different design and appeared to be more efficient as the stated reson for replacing one of the compressors was to reduce electrical consumption). The type XXI had two of these Junkers compressors mounted outboard of their main deisel engines, where they proved impossible to access for servicing and consequently gave loads of problems.BTW if anyone has more info on the Junkers air compressors fitted to U-Boats i'd like to know.
